Church at Sevenhill Winery, Clare Valley, South Australia

There are many “must visit” destinations in the Clare Valley. Sevenhill is home to the region’s oldest wines and vines. For a unique winery experience, visit its church and walk through the crypt and hand-excavated cellars.

Five trails to follow

Trails link many Clare Valley towns. Five looped trails surround Riverton, where the 19 kilometre Rattler Trail begins. Riverton also has museums, thriving alpaca and olive product businesses.

Auburn is where the Rattler Trail ends and the Riesling Trail begins. The blend of heritage and contemporary includes premium wineries, superb dining and fine art.

The Heysen, Mawson and Kidman Trails also run through the region.

Pick up a passport

By the 1850s, Burra was Australia’s premier copper mining town. Collect a Burra Passport Heritage Key to unlock the town’s best stories. It’s a complete guide to places like the underground Unicorn Brewery cellars and the Monster Mine area.

Take a drive

Drive to some unforgettable views above Stanley Flat and Blyth. Pockets of vines, farmland and native bush carpet rolling hills and vast plains. The vistas change with every season.

Take another scenic drive from Sevenhill to Mintaro. This atmospheric village has quaint historic buildings, boutique accommodation and sensational food and wine. Close to majestic Martindale Hall, Mintaro is an intimate snapshot of mid-nineteenth century life.

North-east of Mintaro, the former railhead of Farrell Flat also retains its 1870s charm.

Green’s Cottage in Penwortham is one of the Clare Valley’s oldest stone buildings. Pioneer, John Horrock, built it when he arrived as one of the first to explore South Australia.

In Eudunda, grab a pastry from the century old German bakery and admire the architecture of the town’s Lutheran founders.

The Clare Valley, every town has a story.
